SSAT Test Prep: Help, My Child Doesn't Want to Study

The SSAT practice test can be very intimidating for both children and adults. Due to this initial stress factor most children react in ways such as not wanting to study and parents start to panic and put extra pressure on the child. In these situations it is better to take a step back and approach the situation in another way.

Here is a 3 step plan to get your child back on track.

1. Find a SSAT practice test study program that is fun and not boring. Software with a real teacher who verbally explains material covered:

If your child is at a point where they do not want to study then you should take a serious look at the methods you are using. Most likely it is boring and dry which would make parents go hide in a closet if they had to learn the stuff. So why are we making our kids do it? Find a study program, preferably software on the computer where most children are more comfortable using than learning with books. The more interaction the better! There should be a learning section where there is someone who is actually explaining the material. This speeds up the learning process immensely and it is much easier to understand if someone is explaining it to you. Then of course you need practice tests, just like at the real SSAT. This method actually makes learning fun. Fun of course leads to success. Try it out.

2. Set up a realistic learning plan WITH your child to reach realistic goals:

Most likely you as a parent are more motivated than your child. This motivation is signaled as pressure to your child. Stop right now and rethink your strategy. How can I get my child motivated again? If parents tell their children to do it, it is a definite motivation killer. Take the time to put together a study plan together WITH your child. Only then it will make sense for your child to start learning, since they were actively involved in setting up their own plan.

3. Find a reward system to help keep your child motivated:

If you work hard on something then you most likely want to see something from it. Don't you? Children do to; but it certainly isn't the score on the SSAT since it is too far down the road. Children want mini rewards each step of the way. So parents give them those rewards deserved. But stop right there... Money is not the answer. Do something with your child together. Go to a movie, go for an ice cream or play soccer in the backyard. Your child wants your recognition on their achievement so reward together.

So there you have it the 3 step motivation plan; finding the best software, setting up a realistic study plan and rewarding your child. But please don't forget to do it together since that is the real secret.

Download Free Movies

Freebies delight many of us and computer users are lucky to be able to download free movies from the Internet. There are several hundred sites advertising downloads of free movies but some are in the business peddling illegal fare. The trend to download free movies has also irked movie studios that fear a Napster-like piracy of music and movies via the Internet.

The free movies available online are usually those in the public domain because their copyright has not been renewed. The latest full-length movies are seldom free and they require a small amount to be paid sometimes charged as membership or shipping or mailing fee by some companies. If a recent movie is completely free, most often the transaction can get you into legal trouble.

The websites ibiblio.org and archive.org have free movie downloads. These sites have a collection of public domain movies. You can even get full-length movies from the 1930s and 40s such as the Three Stooges. It is legal to download these movies because the copyright has expired and they are now in the public domain.

The major movie studios are worried about this trend of free movie down loads. They see a future scenario of movie piracy similar to the music piracy boom of a few years ago. New technology makes it more difficult to put free movies on the Internet. Microsoft is planning a new operating system that will have strong anti-movie piracy protection.

The software is being developed in consultation with movie industry. The studios are looking at controlling the movie downloading market. With broadband speeds, Downloading a movie may become as common as downloading a song. A new alternative is to rent movies online for a small fee.

The movie download business is still in its infancy and faces many hurdles. For one, most people prefer to watch a movie on a television screen and not on a computer. Also, the hard drive of a P.C. can store only a few movies.

Downloading a movie from the Internet requires the following items. First, there must be a 56K modem or a broadband connection, 64 MB of RAM, Windows (95,98, ME, 2000, XP, Linux) and a movie download player like Quick Time. If all these components are present, you can play videos by download or stream. Movies should start playing within a minute or two once you select a link to the page that supports your modem speed.

It is not at all a tall order to expect the movie industry to be completely transformed by the free download business just like when the iPod hit the music scene. A way will surely emerge for the present technology to shed its defects and to bring out a high-quality product.

Car Driving Games - As Good As the Real Thing?

A question I'm often asked is, "how do car driving games compare to driving a real race car?"

Its a very good question, and one that I'm uniquely qualified to answer because I have had the good fortune to accumulate a number of hours behind the wheel of both PC racing games and my real race car.

Before I get into the nitty gritty, allow me to share with you a few of the obvious and not so obvious differences.

1. Playing car games on the computer is significantly less expensive than driving for real (obvious), however, what most people don't think about is the massive time commitment that real racing demands. For example, prior to the race weekend, I would typically need to spend at least 2 nights in the shop preparing the car for the weekend's racing. This would include checking the toe, alignment, and weight distribution. I'd also have to check all the fluids, do a nut and bolt check, and (possibly) change the tires or brake pads. If I had damage from the previous race, ad at least two more days. If you have a life outside of racing, this can be quite a problem, let me tell you! With a NASCAR game on your computer, you have none of this hassle.

2. Playing a NASCAR game on your PC will allow you to drive a wide variety of cars on a wide variety of tracks. In real life, I could barely afford the one race car that I had and if I was lucky, I might get to go to two different tracks with any regularity.

3. Playing PC racing games poses no threat to your health. You can be seriously injured, or die, in a real race car (ok, this was obvious, but worth remembering!)

So, with these few thoughts out of the way, lets dive into the actual difference in the "on track" experience!

I have to admit, there is nothing quite like strapping yourself into a real race car to head out on the track. Its is one of the greatest thrills that I've ever had in my life! From the smells, to the feel of the racing seat, to the rumble of the motor, there is just nothing like it. Moreover, the feeling of acceleration is pure crack to a speed junky like me.

Sadly, the PC racing game doesn't do much in the way of matching this first few (and important) attributes. That is of course, unless you've invested a TON of money in a motion simulator.

Obviously getting a motion simulator like this one is beyond the budget most every sim racer. If it wasn't, why not just buy a real race car?

So why play a racing game then? Ah....because there are some very good parts of it!!

For one, the advanced physics models in today's games to a very good job of giving you the feedback you need to actually improve your skills...not to mention provide you with a great deal of satisfaction when you execute a corner just right.

The key to speed in a race car, be it online or off, is to most effectively manage the transfer of the car's weight around its four wheels as you maneuver the car around the track. If you are thrashing about, cranking the wheel and slamming on the brakes, you will be slow - simple as that. Why? Simple, improper weight transfer leads to a loss of mechanical grip, and when you lose grip, you slow down.

Another area of significant similarity is in the tuning of the suspension. Whether you are tweaking your virtual car, or your real one, ensuring you have the right springs, sway bars, shocks, etc... is absolutely critical to a well handling race car capable of competitive lap times. The principles that apply in the real world, apply equally so in the virtual world. A tip of the hat to the programmers in this regard!

And finally (at least for this post), the remaining key element of racing cars is the psychological aspect. The whole purpose of racing is to compete with other human beings - and in particular, to whip their butts! Back in the 'ol days of online racing, the experience was not nearly as good as it is today. Thanks to improvements in technology and connection speeds, the warping (arbitrary bouncing around of the competitor cars on your screen) is pretty much a thing of the past. This allows for close racing - and close racing is what provides the driver with the psychological thrill that so many of us crave!

Look Out For Foods Rich in Vitamin E

Like many vitamins, vitamin E is also an antioxidant. And this means that it gives enormous health benefits to the body. Some of the health benefits from taking foods rich in vitamin E include reduced risk of many cardiovascular problems, better vision, and a healthier skin. While these are itself reason enough for taking vitamin E rich foods, studies are also suggesting that it could be helpful in preventing serious illnesses like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Studies about Alzheimer's Disease

A staggering more than 32 million people are victims of Alzheimer's in USA. Though in the early stages of the disease only limited areas of memory related points in the brain are affected, gradually more brain cells get damaged, thereby making the patient totally incapacitated. Researches conducted at NIA, or National Institute of Aging, indicate that taking foods rich in vitamin E can substantially reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

The RDA, or recommended dietary allowance, of vitamin E is 22 IU per day. At the same time, when taking these foods, it is important to make sure that you do not overdose on vitamin E since it is an anticoagulant and so could cause bleeding. Vitamin E may also interact with certain medicines.

Many fruits, green vegetables, nuts, and oils are foods rich in vitamin E and even while researchers are conducting more experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of the vitamin in controlling Alzheimer's disease, it is best for you to stick to a diet of foods rich in vitamin E to get your daily quota of the vitamin.

Studies about Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease is a condition where the neurotransmitter ends of the nerve cells fail to function properly in the affected person. Towards the later stages of the disease, the patient will have much difficulty even in performing basic tasks. The root cause of Parkinson's disease is yet to be unraveled, though Parkinson's Disease Society has come to the conclusion that foods rich in vitamin E can have some effect in preventing its triggering.

Much more research needs to be done on the subject to establish the cause of the problem and how vitamins can help in preventing or controlling the disease. Information contained in the Lancet Medical Journal is also supportive of the idea that those who take foods rich in vitamin E seem to have reduced possibilities of developing Parkinson's Disease. However, all studies conducted so far have not produced conclusive results.

Acai Berry - How to Lose Weight With Acai Berry

What is Acai Berry?

The acai berry is a fruit of the acai palm tree. It has been harvested by native Americans for hundreds of years, forming a staple of the local diet. However, it became popular in the west only a few years ago when it was publicized in numerous TV shows, newspapers and magazine articles. Why these little berries got so much attention from the media? It turned out that acai berries contain an amazing combination of health-promoting nutrients, among them antioxidants, dietary fiber and monounsaturated fats. No wonder they have taken the world by storm!

How Acai Berry Helps You Lose Weight?

Acai berries are most known as a weight loss supplement, although they have a number of other benefits such as reducing the aging process and helping cell recovery. The weight loss properties of acai berry can be largely explained by the increased metabolic rate it causes. This happens because of the very large amount of antioxidants (substances, which prevent oxidative stress and cell damage) it contains. This leads to faster fat breakdown, increases energy levels and fights fatigue. Combined, these effects make the process of losing weight faster and easier without any side effects usually associated with synthetic chemicals. Many research papers suggest that eating a diet high in antioxidants is the key to successful weight loss.

How to Choose the Right Acai Berry Supplement?
The following are simple guidelines, which will help you choose the best acai supplement and not fall prey to scams.

Choose products that contain 100% pure Amazonian acai berry extract. Other products are a waste of time and money.
Steer clear of products that seem very cheap. Do not forget that acai berries are harvested manually in the Brazilian rainforest, which is a very labor-intensive task. A good price estimate is $40-50 per bottle and cheaper is not always better.
Make sure that the vendor provides money back guarantee. In a few rare cases the product may not work, the money back guarantee makes sure you don't lose money.

How to Study For the GRE Test (Graduate Record Examination)

The GRE test proves to be a very important test, but do not sweat it just yet. There are ways of which you can go about it successfully. Below is a list of suggestions on how to study for the GRE test.

1. Familiarize yourself with the GRE test prior to the day you have to take it. By familiarizing yourself with the test, you will have an idea of what to expect. By obtaining the knowledge of what to expect, you will have a smoother ride throughout the test. If you do not know what to expect then it will be easier for you to become flustered during the test, thus making the test more difficult than it has to be.

2. Allow yourself an adequate amount of prep time for the GRE test. By being well prepared, you will be more inclined to receive a better GRE score on the test. Spend as much time preparing for the test as you possibly can. As little as three to four months or as much as a year should be plenty of time for you to well prepare yourself.

3. Set a goal to receive the GRE score you wish to obtain. Setting goals is the prelude to an accomplishment. By setting a score goal for yourself, you will give yourself an idea of how much preparation and study time you will need so that you can achieve the score. Goals give you something particular to work toward.

4. Steer clear of distractions when studying for the GRE test. Distractions are, well, distracting. When studying for the GRE test, you want to focus solely on the content of which you are studying. Try to refrain from any and all distractions, such as television, music (unless listening to music helps you study), cell phones, etcetera.

5. Study a variety of texts. Studying more than one text will cover more of the test overall. This can definitely help you to better prepare yourself. Some text suggestions are Kaplan, Princeton Review, Barrons, Big Book, and Power Prep.

6. Vigorously practice the GRE test before taking the actual test. As the saying goes, "practice makes perfect". Think of it as a sport. In sports, players have to practice regularly so that they can become better and better at their sport. The same goes for the GRE test. The more you practice, the more likelihood that you will receive the GRE score that you would like to will increase.

7. Concentrate primarily on the sections of the GRE test of which you believe you will struggle in. The test is divided mainly into four separate sections: analytical writing, research, quantitative, and verbal. Only you yourself can truly know what areas you excel in and what areas of which you may need more assistance in. Study the test as a whole, but spend a bit more time on the areas of which you are not so great in.

8. Be aware of how much time you are allotted for each portion of the test. Once you have studied the test content for awhile, begin taking practice tests. When taking these practice tests, time yourself in tandem with the time limitations for the actual test. By doing this, you will acquire an idea of how to pace yourself during the test.

How to Choose a Baseball Camp?

Off season is always around the corner. Do you want your child's baseball skills to progress when baseball stops or during one of the school breaks, or do you want them to stay the same or decline? You obviously want them to get better!

How do we accomplish this? Baseball camps, they help your child progress fast whilst having fun. Baseball camps are of course not as serious as training and team baseball, which is just what kids thrive in. If you want your children's baseball skills to be ahead of everyone else and to improve from last season, not stay the same, or get worse from not practicing, then baseball camps are the way to go.

Baseball camps are also great for some parents as you will get some time away from your children, and you will get some privacy , which can also help relieve some of your stress. Best of all, if the camp is professional, fun and also educational, the kids will have a blast, and really improve there game. Two positives from one result.

Cost:

The cost for baseball camps generally varies, though as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Camps that cost much less are generally not specialized baseball camps, meaning they don't only play sports or baseball, they do other things such as arts and crafts. Those kind of camps are good for children. Though if your looking for a baseball camp or a sports camp, these camps wouldn't be the right choice, as your child wouldn't get to play as much baseball as he/she would have hoped.

Camps that cost more are usually specialized baseball or sports camps, meaning that the coaches know a lot about the game. These baseball coaches are there for your children to progress as much as possible whilst having fun. These kinds of camps are better if your looking for a baseball camp as your child is playing baseball or other sports the whole time, meaning that he/she is improving, not doing arts and crafts which won't make your child better at baseball.

Specialized camps may seem expensive, but with the level of coaching and amount of baseball skills that your child will be learning, they will pay big dividends in the long run.
